In this collection project I choose vintage Playboy magazines as my subject, as I was interested in how this specific type of printed material presented its imagery, but also the decisions that were made on typography. I felt inspired by the style of these magazines, particularly in the 80s, due to their playful typography and use of colour. From this collection of magazines I created a publication which explored the line between art and porn, discussed in an essay which is also published in the book. Here, I touch on the idea of 'drawn porn' and how changing the medium may affect the explicitness of the images or enable it to be recognised as a piece of art. To create content for this publication I took a multifaceted approach in process by experimenting with cyanoprinting, solvent transfer, hand drawing, collaging and risograph printing to produce a more eclectic book in medium that reflected the written topic. I printed the final design on 200gsm textured paper and bound it with black thread using a simplistic running stitch in an attempt to sort of mirror this sense of batch manufacturing.
